I read this book with a review copy that doesn’t have all of the links working like they would in Kindle so for the longest time, I couldn’t figure out what these words were at the end of most chapters. I thought maybe they were words to discuss with your child. I accidentally picked a book for a younger audience that I normally read which is Young Adult fantasy as well as normal adult fantasy. Regardless, I very much enjoyed the story about Gordon and his invisible friend Zack so I kept reading.When I finally got to them, I really enjoyed the explanations in the end notes or hyperlinks. They gave references to British expressions that I didn’t know plus historical background on expressions and word derivations that were fascinating in their own right. Thank you, Robin Chambers, for caring enough about your readers to give additional background.
As to the story, who hasn’t wanted his very own invisible friend who can handle the bullies in life? I’m delighted with the way the story developed and with how Tom changed and became more compassionate.
This is an intriguing story enabling us to watch a very precocious child develop his imagination and dreaming skills and then grow into a young wizard. I look forward to seeing more of Merlin and both Grace and Zoe in the next round of adventures with Gordon and Zack. It’ll be interesting where else on earth and elsewhere that we can tour next with them.

Fantasy is not normally the kind of book I read, but because I'm in a book club it forced me to take a look. I must say I was captivated from the beginning when Gordon was born and his alter ego was there with him. Zack has been with Gordon ever since. I like the way Robin works the characters into my heart - Gordon especially and his sidekick Zack. But his mother Edith never ceased to amaze me with her own ability to perceive a situation and mind-read almost as well as Gordon. Maybe that's because she is a mother and they do have their own powers. The story was delightful, and exceptionally told. Even the use of words I didn't understand did not deter me from enjoying the read. That's a testament to Robin Chamber's superb writing style. The way he throws words and phrases together at the end of each chapter must be a British thing so I'll leave that alone and let him explain it to me; or maybe that's his writing style too. Needless to say I didn't understand the going back over the chapters and quit while I was ahead. In spite of all of that, I still loved it. I also enjoyed the video that introduces you to his next books. Very well done and delightful. I give it five stars! Good Job Robin.
Gracious me, what a lovely surprise A WIZARD OF DREAMS is! The writing is superb and bright, a modern invocation of ancient, mythical powers colored by Brit English. Without pandering to mainstream, fantasy expectations, this modern story chronicles the early life of a supernaturally gifted, marginalized boy named Gordon, and his invisible guide, Zack. Like any good Dickensian protagonist, Gordon encounters difficulties that reveal the underbelly of his world, the dirty edges of “real” society. How can you not fall in love with this child? Gordon becomes my hero by the mere fact that he can still dream and believe and love, even after enduring the abuse of damaged individuals. A beautifully rendered tale that I would compare to a deep-sea dive that yields unexpected philosophical and spiritual pearls. I would recommend this for fluent readers of all ages.
A WIZARD OF DREAMS (MYRDDIN’S HEIR, BOOK 1) refuses to bow to many tropes of fantasy or YA fiction, and for that I applaud author Robin Chambers. Youngsters will relish the adventures of supernaturally gifted child savant Gordon and his imaginary (or perhaps spectral?) friend Zack as they navigate the pitfalls of growing up in modern day suburbia. But adults may be equally intrigued by what Chambers is up to with this illuminating entry in a genre usually rife with cliché.
At first, I found myself slightly jarred by the seeming lack of immediate McGuffin or central conflict. Which is not to say the story drags (it moves at a clip), only that biased portions of my mind were asking “OK, fantasy novel, where’s your magic jewelry to be found? Your beasts to be slayed? Your menacing villains to be ousted?” (Given the book’s central themes, this may very well be by design.)
But A WIZARD OF DREAMS is not boilerplate fantasy. It’s not simple to categorize—a magical tale deeply concerned with real-world wisdom; a coming-of-age story that delves headlong into antiquity and mythology; a vibrant adventure not afraid to touch the roots of misery. At its heart is an appeal for imagination, wonder, and common human decency in our modern world. The true “foes” of the piece, then, are Apathy and Ignorance rearing their heads in many guises wanton bullying, half-baked parenting, scarred childhoods, apathetic adolescence, regressive adulthoods, jaded worldviews and lukewarm concern for the state of our planet. Our hero Gordon doesn’t face villains so much as damaged individuals. And that realization raises the stakes both for him and the reader.
If this sounds too brainy, it’s only because I’ve been peeking under the hood. It’s a wonderful, easily digestible tale written with heart and wit, full of sweeping ideas, big surprises (that I’ve resisted spoiling), and poignant ideas about the human need for greater intellect, empathy and (yes) dreams. Here’s a unique voice in fantasy fiction.
